Driving Directions Cancun to Playa del Carmen- Puerto Aventuras
How is driving in Mexico?
Stay safe when making any turn in Mexico always look in front and behind to make sure traffic is clear before you make your turn. Do not stop in the middle of the road. All along the Riviera Maya there are many speed bumps these are steep so slow down before passing them. Be careful when turning left or U turning on roads with no median divider. If there is a special lane or U turn lane do as you normally would, with caution.
At other times when turning in areas with no median divider always check your rear view mirror first! On an undivided road it is customary to pull off the road to your right, put your left blinker or emergency flashers on and wait for traffic to clear. With no one else in either direction make your turn. At times military personel do car searches, if they stop you treat them with respect and do not photograph them, their vehicles or establishments. Remember in Mexico is Kilometers NOT miles be aware of your speedometer and keep your distance from other cars The Mexican Federal Police (Policia Federal or "Federales") patrol the roads. Unfortunately, the culture of "mordida" (the form to say bribe in the local slang) still prevails, and as often as not the Federales may be willing to let you off with a warning in exchange for some folding money. However, do not by any means assume that the officer is expecting a bribe--some are well aware that it is illegal, and they will be offended or may even arrest you for offering. As in most places, courtesy and respect are most important. The best is just to stay within the speed limits and drive safely.
